Eyelid lift

Whether woman or man - according to Dr. Scholz's recommendation there is a lot of potential for rejuvenation in eyelid correction or eyelid lifting. Drooping eyelids, tired eyes, sagging skin on the upper or lower eyelid can be treated wonderfully according to his experience.

Reasons

Skin and tissue structures change with age. Soft parts of the upper eyelids multiply and become sleepier.

In addition, the eyelashes rotate downwards and no longer show the horizontal or ascending position seen in younger years.

This makes the eye area look more tired or sometimes strained than fresh and friendly.

Experiences

Many patients who present themselves in my private clinic for upper lid plastic surgery also have problems with the eyebrows and occasionally also with the eyelid lifter muscle. As your plastic surgeon, I need to have very detailed knowledges about all these important structures.

The upper eyelid cannot be seen as an aesthetic and functional unit without analytically looking at the eyebrows and also at the muscle that lifts the eyelid.

An upper lid plastic surgery without adequately recognizing and correcting possible problems of the eyebrows or the eyelid lift muscle will most likely not produce a perfect result in the sense of the patient.

Occasionally it is indicated that upper eyelid correction consists mainly of removing the excess of upper eyelid skin.

In the total number of cases, however, many more factors, anatomical structures and physiological patterns need to be understood and controlled in order to achieve true rejuvenation of the face around the eyes.

There are a total of 7 layers and layers of different tissue structures

There are a total of 7 layers and layers of different tissue structures from the outer skin down to the conjunctiva that lies against the eyeball.

All these structures have very important functions and the surgical alteration of all these individual tissue layers has very different effects on the function and aesthetics of the upper eyelid.

I am happy to show you personally possibilities that not only help you to look fantastic, but also to feel so.

Surgical Procedure

Eyelid lifting, blepharoplasty, upper eyelid correction are surgical procedures that are best performed by an expert in the field.

Short Info

Fact Description
Term Blepharoplasty
Duration 1 - 2 Hours
Anaesthesia Local anaesthesia, also general anaesthesia by arrangement
Stay ambulant - on request also stationary
Sports after 1 - 2 Month
Healing 80% of the swellings disappear after approx. 2 weeks, 20% after 4 weeks.
Aftercare 1 - 2 weeks after the operation, repeated follow-up checks up to more than 1 year after the procedure

During the first consultations you have the opportunity to discuss the surgery procedure in detail with the surgeon. Here it is very important for Dr. Scholz to understand your wishes and to check the status of your eyelids.

Where are the incisions?

During eyelid lifting, the incisions lie directly in the eyelid crease of the upper eyelid. There is almost no other place on the entire human body where wound healing is usually as effective as here.

In an eyelid lift of the lower eyelid, the incisions are 1 to 2 mm below the eyelashes. This incision also heals very well and the scars are no longer visible to the naked eye as soon as the swelling has subsided and the scars have faded.

As a rule, the plastic surgery lasts between one and two hours, is performed under local anesthesia with or without twilight sleep and does not require an overnight stay in the clinic.

The operation starts with small incisions on the upper and / or lower eyelid.

Then the remaining skin is removed, the underlying muscle is partially narrowed, the orbital septum (separation of eye socket and outer eyelid) is incised, orbital fat compartments are resected or repositioned, possible additional procedures are performed (e.g. fixation of the lacrimal gland or the eyebrow, operation on the eyelid lifter muscle, etc.), and finally the eyes are closed with non-absorbable sutures.

This means that the stitches, most of which are covered by plasters, should be removed by the surgeon one week after the operation.

There are very different methods of eyelid lifting and correction. A very individual surgical treatment plan must always be worked out for you, depending on the degree and severity of the signs of aging and pathological changes.

The methods used are also very different depending on the ethnic origin of the patient (e.g. Asian eyelid lifting, etc.) and these are discussed in detail in advance.

Healing

Patients rightly may ask how long it takes to heal in order to adjust their personal schedule.

The healing process depends on various personal factors. In general, however, you should expect at least 4 weeks of healing.

Your behaviour after the procedure as well as modern methods lead to a fast recovery. During the first few days, the surgical wound must not get wet, so the full bath or shower should be replaced by a sponge bath.

The carrying of weights as well as one-sided loads must be strictly avoided. Sunbathing should be avoided until the scar has healed completely.

A trip by plane should be possible, but we recommend to discuss such plans with the surgeon in each individual case.

The following recommendations favour the result and the healing. You should exercise the highest possible discipline here.

Area Explanation From
Excersises

Exercises such as heavy lifting (removals, shopping), physical work (work, gardening) and sport should be avoided. There are 2 reasons for this:

  • The remodeled tissue must stabilize in position and heal with the optimal contour.
  • No sweat enters the eyes and the treated area.
min. 21 -  30 Days
Sun Direct sunlight on the operated area must absolutely be avoided, so that scars heal wonderfully. Wear a hat and sunglasses. min. 90 Days
Sleep Sleep with the upper body raised (30-45°). min. 7 - 14 Days
Hygiene Full body shower is possible 3 - 4 days after the operation. min. 3 - 4 Days
Cooling Cooling the eyelids is a very helpful thing and supports the early phase of wound healing (within the first 24 hours). However, you should take care that very cold cooling aggregates or ice cubes have no direct contact with the skin in order not to injure the tissue. A mild to moderate amount of swelling can be expected in the area of the eyelids on the first day. direct after procedure

Sports

Sports such as tennis, jogging or riding should only be started again after 4 weeks to 2 months. Since rehabilitation can vary greatly from person to person, we have prepared regular follow-up visits for you.

When sports and other activities are restarted you should always consult the doctor individually during these after-treatments.

Nutrition

Sharp and deep-fried food should be avoided within the first 4 weeks after the operation, as this can change the wound healing reddish and itchy. Chocolate and food with a high cholesterol content (e.g. shellfish) should also be avoided.

Side effects

Swelling

Swelling, redness and bruising after lid surgery. Patients quickly want to participate in social life again. This is also possible again quickly, but the reduction of swelling takes some time. The following values are empirical values, which can also deviate.

Tabelle Healing / Swelling
Period Progression Healing
from Day 4 Swelling decreases
from Day 7 After eyelid surgery you will usually see a normal looking upper eyelid wrinkle, but in 40-50% of cases this is even more localized than the originally worked out and expected final result.
fom 14 Days 80% of the swelling should have disappeared by now.
from 30 Days The remaining eye swellings will continue for another 4 weeks until they have completely disappeared.

Adhesive plasters

You will have bandages on your eyelids, which will be removed approximately after 1 week. It will then take some time for any bruising and swelling to disappear completely.

Depending on your professional activity, you should always discuss personally with your doctor when it makes sense for you to return to work.

Aches and pains

Pain perception is a completely individual variable. While sensitive people complain about pain, more insensitive people easily put the pain away.

However, as this is a surgical procedure, postoperative pain and wound pain must be controlled with medication.

Today, there are a variety of very intelligent pain medications that allow a quick return to normal daily activities.

Scars

Since the surgical incisions are made in very discreet places in the eyelid crease or just below the eyelashes, scarring on both the upper and lower eyelids is minimal and usually almost invisible.

The scars fade over time until only wafer-thin lines are visible which are almost invisible to the naked eye.

People who are prone to excessive scarring (keloids) should discuss this with us. There are treatment options that can be used prophylactically before an operation.

In addition, special attention must be paid to these patients in the course of the post-operative treatment in order to carry out appropriate scar care and treatment, which can prevent the development of wide scars or excessive scars.

Aftercare

A high level of aftercare is critical to the success of any surgical procedure. The concept of Signature Aesthetics by Dr. Scholz provides for consultation long after the operation.

For Dr. Thomas Scholz, it is important to meet the patients after 1 year and check the long-term result. An aesthetic procedure should meet the wishes of the patients and they should feel comfortable with it.

Altenativew without surgery

For various eyelid indications, there are serious alternatives that allow correction of the eyelids without surgery.

The real problem with modern methods is that they limit the possibilities. Depending on what you want as a patient and how advanced your eyelids are, for example, the method without surgery will produce only unsatisfactory results.

Method Short Information
Plasma Pen Is often referred to as upper eyelid correction without surgery. Using low energy, the plasma pen (plasma) produces mircoscopic wounds and tissue heating. This process (plasma) triggers the reduction of excess skin on the upper eyelids.
Thermalifting The radio frequency technology is micro-invasive and also promotes the shrinking of the collagen fibre through heating and it is supposed to result in a lift.
Laser The laser based methods can sometimes achieve very good results. Depending on which system is used. The problem with the use of laser methods is the dosage and potential - sometimes severe - complications.

Overall, the possibilities without surgery are mostly based on the initiation of skin renewal processes or the removal of tissue. Minimally invasive methods also have side effects such as redness and skin irritation. The strengths of these methods come to bear when the tissue at the eyelids has not yet aged too far.

Conclusion

This aesthetic surgery requires more than just a surgical skill, because the physiological processes and anatomical structures must be best understood by the physician.

As a patient, you will have a clear rejuvenation in the eye area and the traces of aging from the age of 40 will be reduced.

Risks and side effects are manageable. For you as a patient, however, a certain period of discipline of 4 to 6 weeks after the operation is required to ensure perfect healing.
